The Novel

Although a work of fiction, much of the story of Mothers Swam is set amongst real events from World War II and the Korean War. Where actual battles and real-life persons are featured I have tried to be respectful, basing my writing on historical sources, and not overstepping the fiction.

The history of so-called ‘comfort women’ is a painful one, which has been somewhat disputed. The fictional story of Sun-a is influenced by some real accounts, but should be understood as fiction.

The novel asks how, after horrific experiences, can life and a relationship be rebuilt.

My story’s answer is that it needs love, purity, and forgiveness.
